Shatavari (Asparagus racemous/ Wild asparagus)
The primary active herb in ‘Sahana’ is Asparagus racemous, also known as Shatavari. The name means ‘one which has many roots’, referring to the remarkable restorative effect of the herb on a woman’s sexuality. It supports a woman’s vitality, but is also useful for menstrual and digestive balance. Shatavari also helps in improving digestion and relieves physical and mental stress.
Hemidesmus indicus (Sariva /Anantmool /Ananta)
Apart from Shatavari, Sahana includes the herb Hemidesmus indicus known in Ayurveda as Anantmool. This herb is useful in reducing excessive bleeding and painful menstruation. Another characteristic of this herb is its ability to ensure a clear complexion. The ingredients present in the herb fight the bacteria that cause acne. It also contains amyrins and rutins (it is a yellow crystalline flavonol glycoside that can be found in various plants and is primarily used in medicines for strengthening capillary walls) associated with mental clarity and energy.
Berberis aristata (Daru haridra/ Indian barberry)
This herb supports the immune system by stimulating cells to fight infection without releasing inflammatory hormones. It helps balance the hormonal functions and also supports uterine functions. It is a known source of natural COX2 inhibitor without any side effects. This helps in reducing painful menstruation.
Long Pepper (Piper longum /Pippali)
Long pepper is antispasmodic and acts a bio trigger. It helps in reducing cramping.

Research suggests that the most likely cause for PMS is that women are sensitive to the hormonal shifts that occur in the second half of the menstrual cycle. Researchers believe that hormones such as estrogen and progesterone affect women’s moods. They cause changes in the brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. (Neurotransmitters that are mostly affected are Serotonin, fluctuations of which can cause carbohydrate cravings and depression. Endorphins those are crucial for experiencing pleasure and pain. GABA (gamma-amino butyric acid) which is important for remaining calm. Norepinephrine and epinephrine that influence moods and also play an important role in heart rate and blood pressure.) Certain imbalances in calcium and magnesium levels may be a cause for PMS. In addition, excessive stress can worsen PMS symptoms. Poor nutrition is also one of the causes of PMS. (Ayurvedic experts base their recommendations on the idea that PMS is a blockage of the normal reproductive energies called Vata (Vata is the catabolic principle regulating degeneration, movements and stimulation). Sweets and sweeteners of all kinds pacify this kind of energy. For this reason, it is normal for women with PMS to crave sweets and it is highly unlikely to get good results from a low-carb diet during the menstrual period. Ayurveda teaches that the best sugars for relieving PMS when there is stress are fully ripened, juicy fruits, such as cherries, mangoes, melon, papayas and pineapples. It is best to avoid astringent fruits such as apples.)

Ayurveda has long believed that menstruation is a natural time of cleansing and rejuvenation. Ayurvedic practitioners believe that ignoring the need for rest is the fundamental cause of PMS. Lack of proper rest and relaxation during these times can cause cramping, breast pain, headache, irritability, and wide variations in menstrual flow.
Ayurveda teaches that difficulties in emotional control stem from an excess of a group of factors known as pitta (Pitta is the transforming principle and is warming in nature). For women who have PMS, Ayurvedic practitioners advise avoiding meat (especially beef), yogurt, cheese, sour cream and buttermilk. It may also be helpful to avoid wheat products. Ayurveda also teaches that weight gain, fluid retention, bloating, breast pain, visual disturbances, dull headaches, and acne all stem from a group of energies called kapha (Kapha is the anabolic principle and is cooling, fluid and solid in nature, giving stability). These symptoms all result from ‘cold’ so they are relieved by ‘warming’. Use dairy products sparingly, if at all, the week before and the week after your period. If you eat more vegetables than meat, you body will conserve calcium and the decreased dairy consumption will not harm your bones. All vegetables are fine, except cucumbers, cooked tomatoes, sweet potatoes, and tofu. If you have any of these ‘cold’ symptoms, up to 30 minutes a day of moderate exercise on a regular basis will both relieve your immediate symptoms and help normalize you body throughout the month, and over the long term.
