Menopause, apart from marking an end to a woman’s monthly cycle also signals other changes to the body and mind, brought on in part because the body begins producing lesser amounts of the hormones estrogen and progesterone (among others), which regulate menstruation and ovulation. Menopause occurs when a woman's ovaries run out of functioning eggs. Peri-menopause is referred to as the menopause transition years, the time before and after the last period. During these years a woman’s fertility gradually diminishes. Generally the duration of peri-menopause can be anywhere between 5-15 years or in some cases even more.
Menopause is a natural part of aging but there are some other factors such as hysterectomy or chemotherapy, family history, excessive weight gain or loss, use of contraceptives or even viral infections that can cause menopause early. Loss of the hormone estrogen can also be a cause for some symptoms related to menopause.
Symptoms of menopause
Menopause normally occurs between the ages of 45 and 55. According to the Ayurvedic perspective, health problems at menopause represent imbalances in the body that were already growing in the body as a result of stress of shifting hormones. A lot of symptoms indicate menopause such as hot flashes, flushes, irregular periods, mood swings, loss of sexual urge, excessive fatigue, depression, memory lapses, feelings of anxiety, helplessness and dread, headaches, sudden increase in weight, hair loss, dry vagina, indigestion, sore joints and many others. Some women suffer from a lot of problems during and post menopause while some women got through the period relatively smoothly.

Ayurveda has always had a well articulated approach to the management of menopause. The Ayurvedic perspective to healing and emotional well-being teaches balance and how to live in harmony with our own body, throughout the normal transitional period. Ayurvedic treatment includes correction of imbalances in mind and body, consumption of a balanced diet and elimination of toxins from the system. Since Vata dosha is a condition of dry, light and cool qualities, Ayurveda recommends a diet that contain warm, heavy and moist qualities, such as eating vegetables lightly sautéed in ghee (clarified butter) with digestive spices such as fennel, cumin and coriander, served with rice.
